FrankBackpackDonation1_400x244On August 15, Frank Elementary first-graders had special guests during their lunch time. Police officers serving the Guadalupe community gathered at the school to distribute backpacks full of school supplies to every first-grader. They also shared a slice of pizza with the students!

Many first-graders had been learning about police officers and their important role in our community that week. In Linda Slack’s first-grade classroom, students hand-wrote thank you letters to give to the visiting police officers.

“I tried to emphasize that police officers are our friends  and that we should be thankful for their service,” said Slack. “My students really enjoyed learning about their careers and included illustrations of how they help us in our community.”

FrankBackpackDonation2_400x244As a unique town situated between Tempe and Phoenix, Guadalupe has three different police departments that support their community. Police officers from the Tempe Police Department, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, and Maricopa Community College Police Department were all represented at this event.

When asked what his favorite part of attending this event was, Maricopa Community College Police Officer Tim Duron said, “It’s the look in their eyes when they receive a backpack, and that they know we are here to help their community.”

FrankBackpackDonation3_400x244The donation event at Frank Elementary was made possible by the Arizona Law Enforcement Outreach and Support (Arizona LEOS) non-profit organization. Arizona LEOS provides a framework for community members, civic groups, businesses, and education to come together to support proactive programs that bring together law enforcement and the community that they serve.

“Arizona LEOS believes in putting the community into community policing,” said Arizona LEOS President Cindy Hill. “Every police officer that is here today has volunteered their time to engage with the Frank Elementary community.”

Each of the colorful backpacks were filled with new school supplies along with a $20 gift certificate to Payless Shoe Store for every first-grade student. After the students received their backpacks, police officers handed out pizza slices and police department stickers to students.

FrankBackpackDonation4_400x244“I want to be a police officer when I grow up,” said First-Grade Student Liam Matus. “Also, how did they know that my favorite food is pizza?”

Arizona LEOS would like to extend a special thank you to their partners for their donations which made this event at Frank Elementary possible. Thank you to Lerner and Roe Law Group, Right Toyota Car Dealership, and Right Honda Car Dealership for your donations to this program.
