Lyman Family Continues Meyer Support for Nearly Three Decades

Post Date:09/07/2017 2:54 PM

LymanFamily1_400x244Meyer Elementary has been a staple in Tempe for decades. It’s location near the center of the city, tucked away into a cozy neighborhood has made the school a perfect spot for the community to revolve around and grow.

This past spring it was announced that Meyer Elementary would be reopening as Meyer Montessori for the 2017-2018 school year. The change was met with excitement around Tempe, but there was a sense of extra enthusiasm from the Meyer community.

With schools like Meyer being around for as long as it has, and putting in the amount of effort to make sure its students receive the best possible education, it’s not surprising to see these parents choose to enroll their kids at Meyer years later.

There’s no better example of this enthusiasm than Karen Lyman and her family. Lyman is a longtime resident of the Meyer neighborhood whose son and grandchildren attended Meyer Elementary as well as her youngest grandson, who just started at Meyer Montessori.

Karen moved to Tempe in 1990 and shortly after her son, Andrew, began attending Meyer Elementary, and was even one of the participants who worked on the painting of the mural that was placed outside of Meyer for years. Karen remained in the neighborhood as her daughter moved into the neighborhood with her family and had her children attend Meyer Elementary. During this time, Karen joined the Meyer PTA and served as secretary.

“It was a great opportunity to meet people, get to know the principal, Howard Oechsner, and be involved in the school,” said Karen looking back on her role in the PTA. “I really enjoyed my time there.”

Karen spoke excitedly about the opportunities that are open to her grandson as a student at Meyer Montessori and can’t wait to see him develop during his time there.

“He is definitely a hands-on learner, and we think the Montessori setting will elevate these skills,” said Karen about her grandson. “I look forward to having him go all the way through his elementary school years at Meyer Montessori.”

The Lyman family is just one example of countless other family ties that run throughout Tempe Elementary and are part of what make our district so special!
